Escape Room (2024)

LEVEL DESIGN
UNREAL ENGINE 5
MIRO

For this projet, I took a scene from the movie City of Ember (Kenan, 2008) as a source of inspiration to make a prototype of a puzzle-oriented level based on escape room mechanics. This project was made for my Level Design class in my BAC in video game design.

In this 10 minutes escape room, we have an initial state, three different puzzle, each with their own mechanic and one ending to the level.

Level design process

To transform the scene in a video game level, my first step was to divise the scene into different segment. After that I took each segment and found an escape room mechanic that could work for them. With these puzzles decided, I placed each one of them in my environnement, deciding to have the first puzzle as an introduction by which the players are obligated to go through and the second and third puzzles as interchangeable in their order, advocating for player agency.

Once the puzzles were in their place, I inserted some visual guidance and added some sound effects and lights to help guide the players eyes to strategic places leading them to the next puzzle and build up the experience of the prototype.

Environment inspired by the movie

Since my level was set in a memorable moment of discovery and stress in the movie, I wanted to put some of the environment into my level.
